Dear Smithsonian Kite Festival Supporter: The 42nd Annual Smithsonian Kite Festival will soon be here! On Saturday, March 29, 2008 we return to the Washington Monument grounds for this year’s event. Our theme this year is related to China as part of a larger cluster of programs presented by The Smithsonian Associates. We encourage you to embrace the spirit of the theme and create kites inspired by Chinese art and culture. Last year, we changed the judging format of our handmade kite competition to increase the number of kite makers and master kite makers entering. Overall everyone seemed pleased and our numbers did increase. We hope that this year will bring out even more!!! This did, however, change the number and types of awards handed out only slightly. So this year, we would like to go a one price donation for the award trophies of $100. If you would like to sponsor a specific award, please check our website (www.kitefestival.org) to see an updated list of categories. Sponsors will be assigned on a first come, first served basis, so don’t wait to send in your sponsorship request. All sponsors will still be featured on the Kite Festival flyer and website, on signage at the event, and on stage during the festival. Deadline for sponsoring an award is February 4, 2008. And as you know, The Smithsonian Associates, which coordinates the Festival, receives no Federal funding. All monies must be raised privately. Without your generosity it is difficult to imagine how we would be able to make the “grand daddy” of kite festivals possible. Thank you in advance for your contributions to this wonderful event.
